Yisachar - Zevulun - Gad

Yisachar ben Yakov -
Yisachar is buried in Northern Israel (the original Israel) in Sidon which was part of the inheritance that was given to his descendants. He was born on the 10th of Av and left the world at the age of 122. Yisachar and his brother, Zevulun, had a pact together which was that the occupation of the tribe of Yisachar would to engage in Torah study while the occupation of the tribe of Zevulun sailed the seas for trade and thereby supported and made possible Yisachar's Torah study. The descendants of Yisachar were brilliant sages who had expertise in intercalation (astronomical calculations required for making calendars and other related areas). There was a time when every Torah scholar who decided Halacha matters came from either the tribe of Levi or from the tribe of Yisachar.

The symbol of the Tribe of Yisachar is the astronomical calculations.

Zevulun Ben Yakov -
Was born on the 7th Tishrei and left the world at the age of 110. Zevulun was buried in Sidon. Zevulun inherited mountains, hills, seas and rivers and he was not satisfied and complained to the Al-mighty about his portion. Zevulun said "that to my brothers you gave beautiful lands, fields and vineyards". G-d said "they will need your Chilazon" (a rare type of sea snail used for dyeing techeiles, threads for tzitzis). Then asked Zevulun to Hashem "how can I be sure that I will be paid for this rare Chilazon snail ?" G-d replied "whoever takes the Chilazon from you without payment will ultimately fail in his endeavor". The Tribesmen of Zevulun were sea trading merchants and with their profits supported the Torah institutions of his brother Yisachar (Bereishis Rabbah 99:9).

Gad Ben Yakov -
Gad was born on the 10th of Cheshvan and left the world at the age of 125. He is buried in the ancient city of Rumiah, which is on the East side of the Jordan River. This territory was given to his descendants as their inheritance (Sefer HaYashar, end of Yehoshua). It is true that Gad's inheritance was on the East side of the Jordan River which is parallel to the main land of Israel. In the beginning, upon entering the land, he left his own borders to blaze a trail for the other tribes helping them define and claiming their portions of the land. Certain Rabbinical commentaries state that Gad chose to settle near the burial site of Moshe Rabbenu rather then entering the main land. It could be said that Gad plays an eternal roll in guarding the people and the land of Israel by his given portion of land on the border frontier.
