Rosh Hashanah First Day (known in the Torah as Yom Teruah, the day of sounding the Shofer in prayer referred to as Yom HaZikaron (Day of Rememberance, New Year Day of Judgement - Yom HaDin - G-d Almighty determines the future course for every individual in the coming year) - greet each other with the words of "Leshanah Tova Tikatheirvu" (may you be inscribed for a good year) - ten days of penitence begins today and ends with Yom Kippur). This day is used for the counting of the first three years' fruit of trees (orlah) and vegetable and grain tithing. It is also used for the counting of Sabbatical and Jubilee years.

Fast of Gedaliah

Yahrzeit of Gedaliah ben Achikam. After the destruction of the First Temple the Jewish people were exiled to Babylonia. King Nebuchadnetzar allowed a limited number of the Jewish people to remain in the Land of Israel. King Nebuchadnetzar appointed a righteous Jewish man, Gedaliah Ben Achikam, as the governor of Israel. Gedaliah was assassinated and that unfortunate event brought great hardships and grief to the Jewish people. Jeremiah was the primary prophet living in those troubled times.
