Erev Shabat Kodesh Yitro: "Seudat Yitro." The Jews of Tunisia are joyous and sing. "The Ten Commandments" are written in the Parsha, and the Torah resembles a bride, as it says, "Morasha Kehilat Yaakov." The Sages explain, "Don't read morash, but rather mu'urasa, (bethrothed)." The festive meal comes to express the joy of receiving the Torah. According to the elders of the community, this meal is in thanksgiving because during the week of Parshat Yitro, a plague which afflicted children that had broken out in Tunisisa ended. In Algeria it is a Yom Tov, and tachanun is not said at Mincha. All the people gather to hear the Ten Commandments, and feasted on poultry, (not meat- which would qualify for sacrifices on the alter). It is called "Seudat SiYUM - Seudat Yitro U'Moshe.
